- Plan ahead
- Select a person to be in charge of planning the event and creating a theme. Determine the start date and length of your drive.
- Set a Goal
- Decide how many pounds of food you want to collect. A couple thousand pounds of nonperishable food will go a long way.
- Arrange food collection barrel or box delivery or pick-up dates
- When you schedule barrel or box delivery, be sure to arrange a good time for the food pick-up or delivery as well.
- Get Group Leaders Involved
- If a food drive is being held at a local place, encourage leadership to show their
support by sending email, voicemail or letters. Ask companies to match employee donations, such as $1.00 per pound of donated food. Challenge the boss or club leader to perform an outrageous
activity if you goal is met, i.e. kiss a pig!
- Promote Your Drive
- Organize a kick-off event to build enthusiasm. Hand out
shopping lists of most needed items (protein
products - beans, chili, tuna, etc.)
- Build Awareness and Visibility
- Fliers are
inexpensive and easy
- Encourage Financial Contributions
- Set a separate
financial goal versus pounds of food.
- Utilize Exciting Competitions and Creative Themes
- Create competitions with lots of categories – largest individual donation, most protein, must unusual food. Have Macaroni Monday, tuna Tuesday or Peanut Butter week to encourage donations of high protein foods. Create competitions between groups – men against women, juniors against seniors, etc.
- Celebrate your
Success!
- Take pictures of your event and give them to the
Brazos Valley Food Bank – we can include your success story in our quarterly newsletter.
